Halong Bay, a world heritage site with limestone pillars that nearly everyone has seen a photo of. This two-day cruise was what I was looking to, that’s the geology nerd in me, but even if rocks don’t excite you the scenery is something you need to see in person. If nothing else two days on a boat is relaxing. My photos do not do it justice.
What I wasn’t prepared for is how highly regulated the tourists are in the area now, each boat nominates a set course so everyone doesn’t turn up in the same area, and swimming in the bay is not allowed except for one designated beach (it was like walking into a bath and the jellyfish were stinging so it didn’t appeal to me). But at the end of that day, watching the sun go down behind the pillars with a cold drink in hand, the negatives were quickly forgotten.
