West to East – via Haast Pass

Leaving the west coast of the South Island for Wanaka, we had to head through Haast Pass. This was one of the longest driving days we had planned, 3.5 hours of straight driving, but there is so much to see that this could easily extend to 8 hours or more, so head off early in the morning (make the most of the sunrise photos) to allow time to stop and take all the scenery in.

Sometimes (like that below) the best landscapes don’t have a lookout point associated to it.

Ship Creek

Just before you start to cross the island at Haast Pass is a little lookout at Ship Creek. Named after the discovery of part of the hull of a wrecked ship in the late 1800’s, it has a little lookout tower that you can climb to get a higher view. The mozzies (mosquitoes) were pretty bad when we visited, particularly in the tower.

THunder Creek Falls

While the photo does not quite do the falls justice, the thunderous roar of the water falling is what Thunder Creek Falls is renowned for and it didn’t disappoint. You can hear the falls before you see them.

Fantail Falls

The next stop along the drive was Fantail Falls. Such a picturesque view and well worth the stop. There are a few hiking trails that leave from the car park if you have the time, but if not complete the short walk to the falls, sit and reflect for as long as time permits.

Blue Pools

This is the longest trek we allowed for the day. Allow a minimum of an hour to enjoy the 1.5 km trail (there and back). You’ll want to spend a bit of time at Blue Pools itself, better yet take some snacks or picnic to enjoy.

I couldn’t get over how clear the water was!

Lake Hawea

Just before you reach Wanaka you cross a section of land that separates Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. Although it doesn’t have the same mountainous background of Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea has it’s own beauty.
